Triumph Over The Elements!
A wet and windy rugby ground awaited the competitors as they gathered on friday evening to battle the weather as well as each other at the 18th Cambridge Outdoor Volleyball Tournament, included in the Regional Grass Series for a second year. Forty seven teams registered bright and early on saturday to compete in two mens, two womens and three mixed divisions. As well as old friends from teams that have (probably) been supporting the event since the first tournament, there were new entries from as far away as Manchester and Salisbury. With new facilities open at the Cambridge Rugby Club (and the promise of a new shower block for next year!), the campers were soon shaken from their tents and playing their first pool matches to the smell of the cooking hog-roast (a lunchtime treat). Rain interfered with play a couple of times over the weekend but most teams braved out the showers and a few spectators clung onto their umbrellas to watch. By the afternoon the sun was out and the pairs competitors had the best of the day for their qualification matches, the other competitors getting a head-start in the bar. For those without heavy heads the next morning (after dehydrating at the disco of course), the next rounds of the pairs preceded the finals matches in all divisions. These matches proved to be much closer with the International Dream Team taking Mens Division 1 champions The Intimidators to 5 sets in the semi-final, Rhinos and The Penetrators going head to head for 5 sets in the Mens Division 2 Final, and Aviva and Wiltshire Mavericks edging out Hippo Hippo Woua and Team Lisa Dawson in tight finals in the Mixed 2 and 3 Divisions. Europe 1 succeeded over Peterborough Ladies for the Womens championship, and Supers' Spikers took the second Division. Inter 1 headed a strong Mixed 1 Division for top honours. Relaxing to watch the pairs finals at the end of the day, all of the players seemed happy and undaunted by the typical English summer, and ready to do it all again next year!
